A rainy day without screens

- Clear a safe floor-level play space
- Choose movement and a quiet alternative
- Copy an animal dance
+ 5 more explained items
A rainy day does not need an hour-by-hour entertainment programme. Pick one movement game, then one quieter activity, and see whether the child wants to repeat it. This is an original screen-free selection inspired by the PBS activity collection, rather than a promise that every activity on that site avoids screens.
The adult prepares the space and stays involved. Choose movements that suit the child, clear trip hazards and keep play at floor level. There is no need to copy a difficult movement, compete for a score or finish every suggestion. Pause when someone is tired or frustrated.
Use socks, a soft toy, paper and a book already in the house. Keep only the activities you want in your saved list. Let children help choose the next game and tidy up the materials. A short enjoyable session is a complete result; the checklist is a menu, not homework.
Who this list is for
Adults playing with preschool and early-primary children; adapt every game to the child and available space.
Tips
Begin with a clear space
Move breakable objects away from the play area and check the floor for slipping or tripping hazards. Keep doors and routes usable. Stay nearby throughout, especially when children are moving between rooms.
Let movement fit the child
Copy gentle animal movements or dance while the adult sings. A seated version can use hands, expressions or shoulder movements. Change the rules when they exclude a participant instead of making the child keep up.
Use things already available
A rolled pair of socks can become a soft ball and a basket a target. Make the task easy at first. Avoid small loose parts for children who may put objects in their mouth.
Offer a quieter second choice
After movement, look for colours or shapes, take turns hiding a soft toy, or share a picture book. The change of pace is an option. Children can also repeat the first activity if they are still enjoying it.
End while the game still works
Give a simple warning before tidying, then choose one small job together. Keep the successful idea in the list for another wet day. No purchase, printable sheet, video or account is necessary for these versions.

To do
With an adultChoose a few games
- Clear a safe floor-level play space — Move breakables and trip hazards; keep an adult nearby.
- Choose movement and a quiet alternative — Let the child pick from activities that fit their abilities.
- Copy an animal dance — Take turns copying gentle movements; the adult can sing without a screen.
- Play freeze dance — Move while the adult sings and pause when the singing stops.
- Find colours or shapes around the room — Choose safe, reachable objects; point instead of collecting if easier.
- Hide and find a soft toy — Take turns and offer simple clues; avoid cupboards and unsafe hiding places.
- Toss rolled socks into a basket — Stand close, use soft socks and keep other people out of the throwing line.
- Read a story with actions — Act out a gentle movement, then finish by putting the materials away.
Questions and answers
What age is this for?
These versions are aimed at preschool and early-primary children with an adult. The age label does not replace individual judgement. Simplify language, movements and materials for the child in front of you.
Can children do it alone?
This guide assumes adult involvement and supervision. It does not turn physical games into independent childcare. Choose a quiet alternative if the adult cannot safely supervise an active game at that moment.
Do I have to complete the whole list?
No. Choose a game, pause and decide together what happens next. Remove unsuitable activities from your own copy. The list should reduce preparation, not create another schedule to finish.
