A first visit to Kraków works well when you separate the city into connected outings. Begin with the Old Town, continue towards Wawel and leave Kazimierz enough attention for its streets and Jewish heritage. These combinations are editorial suggestions. Adjust the order for bookings, accommodation and your group.
Choose your main interior before reserving. Squares, churches, castle exhibitions and occupation history need different attention. Leave room for a meal, a seated pause and conversation after difficult historical material. If you have fewer days, shorten the list instead of compressing every stop.
The checklist contains only To do items: sights first, then optional excursions and preparation. Print it or create your own Cartdock list and share planning responsibilities. Recheck weather, daylight and official notices for your dates throughout the year. Every optional interior and day trip needs its own access check.
Who this list is for
First-time visitors spending several days in Kraków who want a manageable city route, meaningful historical context and a clear choice about separately booked excursions.
Tips
Follow the Old Town towards Wawel
Start outside the Barbican and St. Florian’s Gate, then follow Floriańska into the Main Market Square. This gives the city an intelligible direction before the walk continues south towards Wawel. Treat the Cloth Hall, church façades and surrounding streets as places to observe, rather than rushing between interiors. Use a short Planty detour when the group needs a quieter pause.
Enter St. Mary’s as a visitor
The basilica distinguishes its tourist entrance on the south side from the main entrance used for prayer. Follow that distinction and remain quiet inside. Check the visitor page before planning to see the Veit Stoss altarpiece, because tourist access and religious services have different arrangements. Keep the square walk flexible if the interior does not fit your day.
Choose a specific Wawel visit
Look at Wawel Hill and the cathedral exterior before choosing a castle exhibition. The castle sells exhibition tickets separately, with some combined options; read what your selected ticket actually includes. The cathedral, royal tombs, Sigismund Bell and cathedral museum have a separate operator. Leave space between admissions and keep the riverside walk as a relaxed finish.
Give Kazimierz its own attention
Begin around Szeroka Street to understand the district’s Jewish heritage, then continue towards Plac Nowy and the river. Kazimierz and the wartime ghetto in Podgórze are distinct places on opposite sides of the Vistula. Read interpretation and respect worship, cemeteries and residents. A synagogue exterior stop does not establish permission to enter; check the individual site before adding an interior.
Select one museum for a focused outing
Rynek Underground suits an Old Town visit; Schindler’s Factory adds the history of Kraków under Nazi occupation to a separate river-crossing outing. Check each museum’s current notices and booking channel. For personal online tickets to Schindler’s Factory, the museum requires an original identity document. Leave time to read and discuss the exhibition instead of scheduling another demanding museum immediately afterwards.
Check the ticket for the actual connection
Walking connects many central stops, but shorten the plan with public transport when needed. The KMK guide distinguishes ticket duration, zones and particular rail inclusions. Check your chosen journey and follow the validation or activation instructions for your ticket format. An airport transfer or excursion deserves its own check; a ticket that suits the centre need not cover every onward journey.
Book Wieliczka as a separate excursion
The Tourist Route in Wieliczka always has a guide and involves many stairs. Choose the tour language and confirmed start before arranging transport. Wear comfortable shoes, follow the mine’s luggage rules and check suitability for the whole group. Visitors needing the adapted route must arrange it in advance. Preserve a separate outing rather than adding the mine after an already full city walk.
Prepare a memorial visit with care
Auschwitz-Birkenau is a memorial at the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp in Oświęcim. All entry cards are currently issued online through the museum’s official reservation system. Read its visiting rules, allow for security and plan both Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau. Give this optional visit its own day and time for reflection; it requires a different purpose and pace from city sightseeing.

To do
Old Town and Main Market Square
- See the Barbican exterior — Begin with the defensive structure before approaching the old city gate.
- Pass St. Florian’s Gate — Use the gate as the starting point for your Old Town orientation.
- Walk along Floriańska — Follow the street towards the square and pause to notice façades.
- Explore the Main Market Square — Walk around the square before deciding which interior interests you.
- Look at the Cloth Hall — Observe the building at the centre of the square; check separately for museum admission.
- Visit St. Mary’s Basilica if access suits — Use the tourist entrance and follow current visiting arrangements to see the altarpiece.
- View the Town Hall Tower exterior — Compare its silhouette with the other square landmarks; treat a climb as optional.
- Take a short Planty walk — Choose a manageable stretch of the park for a pause outside the busiest streets.
Towards Wawel and the Vistula
- Continue along Grodzka — Connect the square with the southern Old Town without collecting every interior.
- Explore Kanonicza Street — Choose this nearby street for a slower look at historic buildings.
- See Wawel Hill — Orient yourself using the official map and distinguish the castle from the cathedral.
- Visit a chosen castle exhibition — Follow the admission time and contents of your actual exhibition ticket.
- View Wawel Cathedral — Start with the exterior; check its separate visitor arrangements before entering.
- Walk beside the Vistula below Wawel — Finish with a river view and shorten the walk if the group is tired.
Kazimierz and a separate history outing
- Explore Szeroka Street — Read the district’s Jewish heritage in its streets and religious buildings.
- See the Old Synagogue exterior — Use this heritage landmark as a stop; check museum access separately.
- Pause outside the Remuh Synagogue — Respect worship and check the site’s own rules before entering the synagogue or cemetery.
- Visit Plac Nowy — Change pace after historical stops and choose a meal break nearby.
- Cross the Father Bernatek footbridge — Connect Kazimierz with Podgórze when the group wants to continue across the river.
- Visit Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory — Make the occupation-history exhibition an anchor for a separately planned museum outing.
Optional excursions outside the city route
- Visit the Wieliczka Tourist Route if booked — Follow the confirmed guide, language and meeting instructions; assess the stairs beforehand.
- Visit Auschwitz-Birkenau if prepared and reserved — Follow the memorial’s entry and conduct rules and leave time for both parts and reflection.
Preparation after choosing your sights
- Choose the main stops for each outing — Keep Old Town, Wawel and Kazimierz manageable rather than completing every item.
- Check notices for your chosen interiors — Review closures and visitor arrangements shortly before travel and again before leaving.
- Choose and reserve the relevant museum tickets — Read the actual exhibition, date, entrance and ticket conditions before confirming.
- Check cathedral and synagogue arrangements — Religious sites and cemetery access need their own checks alongside museum bookings.
- Plan public transport and your return route — Check zones, validity and activation instructions for each chosen journey.
- Confirm accessibility for the actual route — Ask venues about entrances and assistance; shorten walks and avoid unsuitable stairs.
- Prepare any optional excursion separately — Match travel to the confirmed admission and follow the operator’s document and luggage rules.
- Save confirmations and agree a flexible finish — Keep entrances and booking details offline; adapt outdoor walks for weather, daylight and energy.
Questions and answers
What should I prioritise on a short first visit?
Choose the Main Market Square and Old Town walk, Wawel and a separate Kazimierz outing. Add one interior that matches your interests. This is an editorial shortlist, not a ranking or a timetable. Drop optional towers and additional museums first, so meals, pauses and the journey back remain comfortable.
Does a castle ticket also include Wawel Cathedral?
The castle explicitly does not sell tickets to the cathedral, royal tombs, Sigismund Bell or cathedral museum. Check the cathedral’s own visitor information if you want those interiors. At the castle, read the selected exhibition or combined ticket carefully and follow its admission arrangements rather than assuming everything on the hill is included.
Should I combine Wieliczka and Auschwitz-Birkenau with city sightseeing?
Plan them separately from the city route and, as an editorial recommendation, on different days from each other. Wieliczka is a guided underground visit with stairs and luggage restrictions. Auschwitz-Birkenau requires advance entry arrangements, respectful conduct and time to understand the memorial. Choose an excursion only when it fits your group’s interests and preparation.
Can I leave museum planning until a rainy day?
Keep a preferred museum and an alternative in mind, but check current closures and tickets before relying on either. Rynek Underground and Schindler’s Factory publish separate visitor information. Match any confirmed slot to the walking route and keep an exterior-only alternative, so a weather change does not force a hurried booking or an unsuitable exhibition.
